Veysel Avsar's Biography
Dr. Veysel Avsar is a Professor of Economics at the College of Business at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, also serving as a Faculty Fellow in the Division of Research & Innovation. He obtained his BS in Economics from Istanbul University in 2006 and his Ph.D. in Economics from Florida International University in 2011, where he received "Outstanding Achievement" and "Outstanding Dissertation in Economics" awards.
At Florida International University, Dr. Avsar served as a Teaching Assistant from 2006 to 2008 and then as a Lecturer from 2008 to 2011. He was a visiting scholar at Deakin University in Australia in 2008 and at the University of California San Diego in 2010. From 2011 to 2016, he worked as an Assistant & Associate Professor and Department Chair in Economics at Antalya International University. In 2016-2017, he was a faculty member at Montana State University. Dr. Avsar joined Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2017 as an Associate Professor of Economics and was promoted to full Professor in 2021. He has been honored twice as "Professor of the Year" by the College of Business in 2019 and 2022 and was the mace bearer for the Fall 2023 Commencement.
Throughout his career, Dr. Avsar has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, interacting with students from nearly 100 different countries. His research in International Trade, Political Economy, and Applied Econometrics has been published in esteemed journals such as the World Bank Economic Review, Southern Economic Journal, Economics & Politics, Journal of International Trade and Economic Development, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, Economic Modelling, Applied Economics, Applied Economics Letters, and Kyklos. He has presented his work at various international conferences and seminars, including receiving the "Best Paper Award" at the 9th Globalization and Economic Policy Conference at the University of Nottingham in 2010.
In addition to his research and teaching, Dr. Avsar is deeply involved in college and university service, contributing to the Curriculum Management Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, the Institutional Review Board, the Center for Faculty Excellence, and College and University Promotion and Tenure committees, among others.
On a personal note, Dr. Avsar is married to Carolina Avsar, a France-born Colombian, and they have three children, each born in different countries. He is an enthusiastic fan of the Miami Heat and the soccer club Galatasaray
